Deep cuts to the police budget have been reversed pending a final vote from Common Council later this month.
Staff will be returned to community policing, the street crime unit and traffic services.
Once council says yea, it’s expected those services would be back in place within a few weeks.
CHSJ News asked Saint John police chief John Bates if the restoration of funding changed his decision to retire and he says he is still retiring as of April 15th.
“There was a lot of misconception that my retirement has something to do with the budget and that is simply not the case”.
Bates says it’s been kind of an open secret that this money would become available and the budget would be revised.
He says the members who were displaced will return to those positions and their could be some new faces in those units.
