The Saint John Regional Hospital’s medical director for the inpatient rehabilitation program believes when it comes to the future of rehab for moderate to severe brain injury survivors, we need to think outside of medical centres.
Dr. Patti Forgeron delivered a presentation at Brain Injury Canada’s semi-annual conference, which is happening on Saint John at the Trade and Convention Centre April 19 and 20, and spoke about the need to address things like community integration, employment services and independant living for these survivors.
“Patients who have been in hospital, for the most part, there’s nothing wrong with their hospital level of care or their rehabilitation care. What’s challenging and extraordinarily fearful for them is what happens after that,” Dr. Forgeron tells CHSJ News.
“I don’t think it’s just support groups, I think there has to be a very dedicated team of individuals who support patients who have had some type of trauma in the community.”
There are more than a dozen speakers, including doctors and survivors of brain injury, speaking at the conference.
