Rothesay town council is moving ahead with plans to build a new $7.5-million arena.
Mayor Nancy Grant says the new facility will replace the Rothesay Arena, which is about 50 years old.
Grant says she is pleased with council’s decision and the fact they are working together.
“It’s no secret that councillors have had differences of opinion,” said Grant, “but we’re now firmly in agreement, ready to move forward on a new arena hopefully.”
Council considered renovating the existing arena, Grant said, but agreed it made the most sense to go for a new one.
An engineering firm found it would cost up to $6 million to bring the Rothesay Arena up to par, which would only extend its life by around 15 years.
Arena Location
Grant said the town previously bought land on Scott Avenue for the new arena, noting the location is important because they have been working hard to densify the downtown.
“We have three schools basically within shouting distance and we have 700 to 800 apartments within walking distance,” she said. “A lot of seniors live in the downtown now in apartment buildings, new ones that we’ve built, and condos.”
Grant said they also hope to include a walking track in the arena, which is something seniors have been asking for.
The town hopes to issue a request for proposals in March and Grant said they will seek provincial and federal funding.
“We believe we are making a good case for a modest proposal that will enhance the health of our residents,” she said.
