Some of Atlantic Canada’s top university basketball teams will soon be competing in New Brunswick.
UNB Saint John has been chosen to host the 2025 ACAA Basketball Championships.
The top six women’s and men’s teams in the league will compete from Feb. 28 to March 2.
Paul Vaughan, who coaches UNB Saint John’s men’s team, said they are really excited.
“Our league has seven teams, so the top six make it, both on the men’s side and the women’s side,” Vaughan told our newsroom.
“Currently we sit in third. We’re hoping for a top-two finish, so we’re right where we want to be.”
The participating teams will only be confirmed once the regular season wraps up in mid-February.
But team captain Ethan Szemerda and co-captain Jack Fury-Miller both feel confident about their chances.
Szemerda said last year was his first taste at ACAA playoffs with UNB Saint John.
“Now hosting it this year, I feel it gives us a big advantage and should be enough to hopefully push us all the way,” said Szemerda.
For Fury-Miller, who is in his fifth year, it will be his final chance to win the championship title.
“I have two first-round eliminations, so we have a lot of steps to cover here. “The first playoff win, and then we got to do it twice or three times,” said Fury-Miller.
While the men’s basketball team at UNB Saint John has won other championships before, they have yet to nab an ACAA championship since joining the league.
