A vigil was held in Fredericton on Friday to mark the 35th anniversary of the massacre at Montreal’s École Polytechnique.
People gathered at Government House to remember the 14 women who were gunned down at the engineering school on Dec. 6, 1989.
Candles were lit during the vigil in memory of each of the women. A 15th candle was lit in commemoration of all women who have died because of gender-based violence.
“The heartbreaking loss of the 14 women at École Polytechnique 35 years ago remains a constant reminder of the pressing need to end gender-based violence,” Premier Susan Holt said in a news release.
“New Brunswick is grateful for the collaboration with amazing community partners, including transition houses, second-stage facilities, outreach interveners and community-based sexual violence services, in this work.”
Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women across the country.
