A double homicide in the community of Chipman is being investigated by the New Brunswick RCMP’s Major Crime Unit.
Police said they received a report of a vehicle on fire with two people inside off Midland Road around 8 a.m. Monday.
Cpl. Hans Ouellette, a spokesperson for the New Brunswick RCMP, said officers located two bodies inside the burned-out white Chevrolet Equinox SUV.
“Given the nature of how these individuals were found, police is still working to positively identify these two individuals,” Ouellette told our newsroom on Wednesday morning.
Ouellette said their investigation led police to believe the two deaths were the result of homicides, but he declined to provide details.
The media relations officer said no arrests have been made yet, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages.
“Police do not believe there’s a safety issue for the greater public at this point. We believe that this incident is an isolated incident,” he said.
“Although, you know, a very important investigation for the Major Crime Unit, we have two individuals that we believe died as a result of a homicide.”
Many residents in the area have questioned why it took the RCMP more than two days to release information about the incident to the public.
Ouellette said these types of investigation can be complex and also very dynamic in the beginning.
“A request was made by [the Major Crime Unit] and the lead investigator that we hold off on releasing any details about the incident while they initiated the investigation,” he said.
Police are looking for any security camera, dash or doorbell cam footage from the area between 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.
Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to contact the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit at 1-888-506-7267 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
