Saint John has applied for federal funding to help mitigate the impacts of future flooding events and sea level rise.
The city and Saint John Energy are hoping to get $11.9 million through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
The money will be used to refurbish the seawall at the former Coast Guard site, raise or replace 10 pumping stations above flood level, and relocate “critical” electrical substations along the waterfront.
In a report to the finance committee, city staff said last spring’s historic flooding caused “significant damage” to the municipal infrastructure.
The city would pay $11.1 million towards the work while Saint John Energy would chip in $4.5 million.
Federal officials will announce who will get the funding sometime this spring.
