New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) has partnered with Canada HomeShare to offer students more housing options.
Officials say the program aims to support isolated seniors looking for company while providing affordable housing solutions for post-secondary students.
Heather Allaby, vice-president of engagement and experience at NBCC, says seniors will create a profile explaining their room, the cost of rent with amenities, and personal interest and indicate what they need help with around the house.
Students will create their profile and HomeShare will match them with the senior and living accommodation that best suits them.
“We’re trying to create greater connections across generations that can benefit all of us,” said Allaby.
Officials note the average student saves an entire year’s tuition in just eight months compared to renting at the market rate.
NBCC Canada HomeShare partnership is currently available in Saint Andrews and Miramichi. Allaby says there are plans to expand across New Brunswick.
