Workers recovering from a traumatic psychological injury (TPI) now have access to a new program through WorkSafeNB.
The SUCCEED program will provide immediate treatment for individuals applying for workers’ compensation, even before their application is adjudicated.
The six-week, six-session program provides the tools and skills to help workers start their recovery.
It gives them access to immediate help to create a strong foundation for recovery and, if required, prepares them for in-depth trauma work.
“A TPI can be emotionally and physically devastating, affecting a person’s ability to function at home, in the community and in the workplace,” Tim Petersen, acting president and CEO of WorkSafeNB, said in a news release.
Work-related TPIs can result from experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event in the workplace. They include anxiety disorder, acute stress reactions, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
WorkSafeNB aid it has seen a big increase in the number of psychological injuries in the workplace in recent years.
Treatment differs dramatically from the traditional treatment of physical injuries, which is why WorkSafeNB says this program is so critical.
“The need for support to these workers is great in New Brunswick,” said Petersen. “WorkSafeNB is taking a lead by providing this immediate treatment, using evidence-based practices by qualified treatment providers across the province.”
Workers with a TPI who apply for workers’ compensation benefits will be automatically referred to SUCCEED. When a claim application is accepted, further treatment will be determined.
Participants can take part in the SUCCEED program in person or virtually.
