A trio of high school students from the Saint John region are being recognized for their leadership skills through a prestigious award from the University of New Brunswick.
Lauren Dysart, Alexi Melanson and Thomas Patstone are three of the latest to receive the J.D. Irving Limited NB Leadership Scholarship. Valued at $10,000 per year and renewable for up to four years, it is one of the university’s most prestigious awards.
It recognizes their leadership ability, academic achievement and extra-curricular involvement.
“Supporting capable young New Brunswickers with training, education and through a rewarding career here at home is at the heart of our business and our partnership with UNB,” said Jim Irving, co-CEO of JDI, in a news release.
Dysart, a Grade 12 student at Saint John High School, plans to study engineering on UNB’s Fredericton campus. She said pursuing her degree at UNB will help fuel her passion for helping others here at home.
“Being awarded the J.D. Irving Limited NB Leadership Scholarship is a great honour and a highlight of my Grade 12 year,” said Dysart.
Melanson, a student at Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain, plans to study business on UNB’s Fredericton campus. He said he is honoured and grateful to receive the scholarship.
“This opportunity will enable me to get the most out of my post-secondary education as I shape my future and career path in New Brunswick,” said Melanson.
Patstone, who currently attends Harbour View High School, plans to study business at UNBSJ. He said the scholarship would allow him to focus on his education and personal growth.
“I will work my hardest to respect this opportunity and make UNB and J.D. Irving, Limited proud of their decision,” said Patstone.
Other recipients of this year’s scholarship include William Gusarov of Fredericton and Camden Siliker of Lyttleton.
