The forest fire season officially begins today in New Brunswick and officials say the weather has been in their favour so far this spring.
Wildfire prevention officer Roger Collet says it’s still a risky period for burning since green-up is a few weeks away.
“That kind of varies depending on what part of the province you’re in. So in the south we green-up sooner, so maybe mid-May to the end of May and then as you move north maybe a week or so later.”
Collet says a handful of fires have already been reported but they haven’t been serious.
He says it was fairly quiet in 2021.
“We has 180 fires last year and a total of 380 hectares burned, which is below average.”
Over the ten-year average, Collet says 274 fires are recorded and about 476 hectares are burned.
Starting today, the provincial fire watch map will be updated online daily at 2 p.m. to reflect current conditions.
