A warning from Saint John police about a dangerous drug described as 100 times more potent than fentanyl.
Police say the opioid carfentanil was present in two separate sudden deaths which occurred in January and February.
The coroner’s office said the presence of carfentanil was found in the blood that had reached clinically toxic levels.
Both deaths are being investigated, including the source of the drug and the final cause of death.
Carfentanil is used to immobilize large animals and is not approved for human use.
In a news release on Thursday, the Saint John Police Force advised people not to ingest any drug not approved for human consumption and prescribed or recommended by a physician.
Back in 2017, Dr. Jennifer Russell, who was acting chief medical officer of health at the time, issued a provincial warning about the drug.
