The Eastern Trail District Pathfinders and Rangers are helping their local community by making sandwich donations while working toward their Take Action Badge.
“For the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about food insecurity and poverty in Saint John,” says second-year Ranger Grace Perry, adding her unit also helped and participated in the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser.
“Then we decided that we wanted to do something more, so we started researching and we decided to help Romero House with making sandwiches for this weekend.”
On average, Romero House makes 1,000 sandwiches per weekend that are given to people in need of a meal.
Perry’s Girl Guide unit challenged the other units in their district — from Sparks to Rangers, ranging in ages from five to 17 — to make 500+ sandwiches to donate to Romero House. So far, the district’s units have made around 700 sandwiches.
“When we first started talking about [and working on the pledge], you could really see that a lot of the girls didn’t realize that there was like this much poverty [in the city],” said Perry.
The Eastern Trail District’s 21-girl unit gathered at St Mark’s United Church on Thursday to assemble more sandwiches for their pledge. Currently, Girl Guides’ free trial has started and is open to anyone who wants to take part.
“I feel like a lot of the girls feel like they’ve actually helped with something, especially since how we actually get to help make the sandwiches – they feel proud because they knew they were actually helping other people around the community.”
