There are no plans to restore the mask mandate in New Brunswick schools despite rising COVID-19 case numbers, according to the education minister.
Dominic Cardy was asked about masking in schools on Wednesday during a briefing on another topic.;
Cardy said he has no plans to supersede advice from Public Health when it comes to wearing masks in schools.
“If Public Health chooses to make additional recommendations to government, I can tell them I would happily support those measures because I suspect they will be based on science and I am here to support science and evidence in all circumstances. To this date, there has been no such recommendation made,” Cardy said.
Cardy said the decisions around masking and other measures in schools have been provided by Public Health and implemented on that basis.
“I believe my statements around our response to the pandemic throughout the last two years has been reasonably clear and consistent and they continue to be that, we need to, not just in education and not just as a province but as a society, listen to scientists and experts. When they have something to tell us, they need to speak up,” Cardy said.
