A new women’s basketball league has teamed up with a Halifax brewery for a new courtside collaboration.
The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association (MWBA) has collaborated with Garrison Brewing in creating the Court Side India Session Ale.
“The brewery came on board as a partner with the MWBA, and they brewed our beer called Court Side, and it’s available at Nova Scotia and New Brunswick liquor stores at the highest market stores,” said Brad Janes, founder of the MWBA.
Garrison Brewing has already distributed 3,000 cans and 50 cents of every can goes to the league.
“To have a beer named for our league is something we never thought of, but Garrison Brewing is pretty pro-active, and we couldn’t be happier, and when I saw it at the liquor store it was just a real rush,” mentioned Janes.
Janes also brought up the 50 cents from each can will go towards league operations.
“We do have bills to pay … there are day-to-day operations and that’s what the money is going towards. The league is a non-profit entity, so it’s not like the league is going to build a bank account, so the money will go towards operating expenses.”
There are six teams in the MWBA, including three from New Brunswick and three from Nova Scotia.
Janes added additional information about the league’s start date.
It will now begin as tournament play over the May 14 to 15 weekend in Fredericton.
“The MWBA adopted a ‘tournament’ style series of weekends which unfold three times during the regular season leading to the Final 6 championship in Halifax. Both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia teams will play each other in home-and-home sets during the week to create a 10-game regular season.” reads the MWBA’s website.
The franchises include:
-
- Port City Fog
- Fredericton Freeze
- Moncton Mystics
- Windsor Edge
- Halifax Hornets
