A new Facebook group seeking hosts for Ukrainian refugees in Atlantic Canada is seeing its membership soar.
Posts range from displaced Ukrainians seeking accommodations to Canadians offering a place to stay, jobs and documentation advice.
Anette Malinowski is a group expert. She came to Canada from Germany and now lives in Willow Grove, N.B., just outside Saint John.
“Our idea first was finding people who can host after arrival. This was our first concern. That people come in and don’t know where to go,” Malinowski said.
She explained why her family wants to help Ukrainian refugees.
“When we moved here to New Brunswick, everyone was helping in some kind, especially when we set up a business and you need contacts to grow. I would like to help others like us,” Malinowski said.
Malinowski’s family is hosting a Ukrainian family of three: a man, a woman and a little girl, now living in Poland.
They are expected to arrive in the next two weeks.
The Atlantic Canadian hosts for Ukrainian Refugees Facebook group also has posts looking for used cell phones and a variety of fundraisers.
