A Saint John police officer accused of using excessive force in an incident last summer has elected to be tried by judge and jury.
Const. Benaiah Sok, a three-year member of the force, was charged with assault causing bodily harm just before Christmas after an investigation conducted by the Fredericton Police Force.
Saint John’s police chief requested the investigation after receiving a report of a member using excessive force while trying to make an arrest uptown in August.
Sok, who joined the force in early 2019, was previously reassigned to administrative duties with no public contact pending the criminal proceedings.
The Saint John Police Force said a Police Act investigation will take place once those proceedings have finished.
A date for Sok’s next court appearance is not yet known.
