A free tax-help program continues to assist New Brunswickers in need.
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) has existed since 1971 and helps those with a modest income and simple tax situation complete their returns for free.
The program is a collaboration between the Canada Revenue Agency and community organization volunteers.
“Canada Revenue Agency provides support, software, and training, so the organizations are then able to review the various clinic models and determine which type of clinic suits their organization, clients that they serve, and their community,” said team leader Natasha Brewer.
“So, volunteers are of course playing a key role in assisting individuals in filing their income tax returns, and therefore these individuals can access important credits and benefits they may be eligible for,” continued Brewer.
Individuals who are eligible for the program include students, adults 65 years or older, newcomers, Indigenous peoples, or persons with disabilities.
“I would stress, anyone who falls under that modest income and simple tax situation can use the program, many Canadians of course fall under the simple tax situation, and that could be those with employment income, tuition, pension, social assistance, old age security, or even disability insurance,” said Brewer.
Free clinics are available virtually through videoconference, by phone, drop-off, and, in some cases, in person.
