The coroner’s inquest into the death of Chantel Moore has once again been pushed back.
New Brunswick’s acting chief coroner Michael Johnston announced the inquest will now start on May 16 at the Delta Fredericton Hotel and take between four to six days.
Moore, a 26-year-old Indigenous woman, was shot and killed in June 2020 by a member of the Edmundston Police Force during a wellness check.
Originally scheduled for December, it was announced in the fall that the inquest would be pushed back to Feb. 22.
Following jury selection at 9 a.m. on the first day of the inquest, Johnston and the jury will hear evidence from witnesses and determine the facts surrounding Moore’s death.
The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations intended to prevent deaths under similar circumstances in the future.
Members of the public and the media will be permitted to attend the inquest, which will be conducted in English and French.
An inquest is a formal court proceeding that allows for the public presentation of all evidence relating to a death.
