The Victoria Day long weekend is starting with welcome news for residents along the Saint John River.
After 10 weeks in operation, the River Watch program for the 2020 freshet season has ended for another year.
On Friday, officials said water levels in all areas continue to drop and are returning to normal levels.
“The freshet this year looked nothing like 2018 and 2019,” said Public Safety Minister Carl Urquhart in a release.
“While we are grateful for this, the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NBEMO) and its River Watch partners were ready to respond.”
Many communities dealt with historic flooding the past two years and were bracing for a similar story this year.
While water levels briefly reached or surpassed flood stage in a couple of communities, most areas never came close.
Greg MacCallum, the director of NBEMO, said while the spring freshet is over, New Brunswickers must remain vigilant about preventing the spread of COVID-19.
“Physical distancing is the best way to prevent the spread and we are counting on everyone to continue to do their part and follow the orders in the state of emergency declaration,” said MacCallum in the release.
