National parks won’t be open in time for the May long weekend.
However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says people will soon be able to go out and enjoy the warm weather.
“As of the beginning of June, some national parks will be partially reopening so that people in the area can use trails and green spaces where physical distancing is possible,” says Prime Minister Trudeau, “Getting fresh air is important, but we all have to be responsible about it. We have to be prepared to make adjustments as needed.”
He notes parks will open in different phases, noting those in close proximity to Indigenous communities will take a little longer to open because of vulnerabilities.
“We will try and align with the local jurisdiction, what the provincial parks nearby are going to be doing, so it’s clearer for people in terms of what they can do in their particular region.”
He says more information on which parks will be allowed to welcome visitors will be made in the coming week.
