New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health says she and her team have assessed the risks associated with lifting COVID-19 restrictions.
However, Dr. Jennifer Russell says she’s confident in the decision to move into phase 2 given the low number of cases the province has seen over the past few weeks.
No new cases were reported on Friday.
Russell says we are moving into the next phase of recovery in the knowledge that the COVID-19 virus is still with us and will be for a while.
“But we are not returning to life as it was before the pandemic, that normal is still a long way off. Maintaining a physical distance form others and continuing to practice good hygiene will be vital in this new normal. And when you can’t maintain a physical distance of two metres, wearing a community face mask that covers your mouth and nose will be required,” says Russell.
Russell adds that a spike in new cases, which can’t be retraced to existing cases, could lead to the re-implementation of certain restrictions.
There have only been two new cases announced since April 18, for a total of 120 confirmed cases in New Brunswick.
To date, 118 people have recovered from their illness and one of the active cases are in hospital.
She also reminded New Brunswickers to take care of their mental health, asking everyone to be kind to themselves and others in this time of crisis.
