Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $175 million in funding for a Canadian company making progress in its COVID-19 antibody research on Sunday.
Vancouver-based company AbCellera says it has isolated several antibodies of the virus, and is hoping to begin therapy testing in humans by this summer.
“(The) antibodies could be used in drugs to treat this virus,” Trudeau said. “This new funding will help support their vital work, and support human trials beginning as early as July.”
Sunday’s press briefing also included an announcement of $240 million in funding for a virtual healthcare platform.
The money will go towards supporting Wellness Together Canada, the government’s online mental health support site, announced in April.
“We’re expanding existing online tools, creating new virtual platforms for mental health and for primary care,” said Trudeau.
Trudeau also confirmed the previously announced top-up to the May Canada Child Benefit of up to $300 per child.
“To parents: I know this is a tough time to be raising kids,” he said. “Right now, you should be able to focus on keeping your family safe. Not worrying about the bills.”
