The Saint John Police Force is looking for a new police chief, but only for a day.
Jim Hennessy, spokesperson for the police force, said this year’s contest to become chief for a day has a new spin on it.
“We’ve always had a chief for a day contest, but given our new restrictions and social distancing that’s going on, we were trying to figure out OK how are we going to do this,” he said.
During National Police Week from May 10 to May 16, a child is normally chosen to spend the day at the police station with the current chief and the team for a look around.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions and what might be going on, there isn’t a firm day for the winner to take over as chief, but Hennessy said they should know more in the weeks to come.
“We decided that we would send out the safety team mask and we would get children between the ages of five and 12 to either colour it or they can put a logo on it, they can design something for the mask,” he said.
Safety mask outlines can be printed off the Saint John Police Force website or can be drawn from that picture.
“We’ll choose from what we hope are going to be a tremendous amount of entries and then once we choose a winner, we’ve got our new chief for a day.”
All entries must be received by Friday, May 8. Submission guidelines can be found on the Saint John Police Force website.
