New Brunswick’s premier says the province is doing everything it can to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a pre-recorded video released Sunday, Blaine Higgs said we are dealing with a great deal of uncertainty, which he knows has not been easy.
“We know there’s more to come. We will have more cases. We know we will likely have people who don’t survive. That’s hard to comprehend right now. That is why we’re doing everything we can to fight this,” said Higgs.
“We made those tough choices early on to shut things down and restrict access into the province, while at the same time making sure we have the essential services we all need.”
Higgs said the work of the all-party cabinet committee, which was established early on in the crisis, has made a real difference.
“We have all put politics aside to make the tough decisions. It has been a shining example in this country of how politicians from different stripes can work together. We all have one objective in mind: keep New Brunswick healthy and safe,” he said.
While health-care workers are essential in managing the crisis, Higgs said, the fight is not entirely in the hospitals.
“We will fight this by collectively doing our part. Staying home, washing our hands, and obeying physical distancing,” he said. “There is an end to this. I can’t tell you when, but there is an end.”
On Sunday, the province said enforcement officers are now fining people who violate the mandatory state of emergency order, with fines ranging from $292.50 to $10,200.
