It’s not just seniors and those with pre-existing who need to be concerned about COVID-19.
That’s the message from Doctor Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, who explains that not even the young and fit are immune from the virus.
“Adults under 40 account for 10 per-cent of hospitalizations,” says Tam, “…and just (Monday), there was the first report of an individual in their 30’s who died of COVID-19.”
She explains though, at the moment, the greatest concern is the introduction and spread of the virus into enclosed settings where vulnerable people live.
“We currently have a number of on-going outbreaks in long-term care homes, cases in First Nations, as well as in a corrections facility.”
Tam says that as of this morning, there were 7,708 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 89 deaths.
Despite over 93 per-cent of the over 236,000 COVID-19 tests coming back negative, Canada’s top doctor says we all need to continue to do our part and stay home.
Tam adds that adults under 40 need to be cautious as well, as they account for 10 per-cent of COVID-19 related hospitalizations.
