We all need to take extra steps to help protect one of the vital essential services across the country; your local letter carrier.
Even though the Public Health Agency of Canada maintains that the risk of contracting COVID-19 through surface contact is low, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is asking us all to take extra steps to protect your local letter carrier and other post office staff.
Changes have been made to how Canada Post operates, including removing the need to sign for deliveries.
Now, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is asking that we all help protect letter carriers by washing and disinfecting our mailboxes, as well as the handrails and door handles nearby daily when possible.
Even though the Public Health Agency of Canada maintains that the risk of contracting COVID-19 through surface contact is low, the Union says the extra precautions are justified as postal workers touch more surfaces and handle more items in one day than most people.
Union president Jan Simpson says that people are relying on the postal system to keep the economy going and to get vital goods, so it’s critical that we all do what we can to keep those front line workers safe.
The national public health agency says that there is no known risk of the virus entering the country on parcels or packages.
