It’s a tough time for everyone right now, with the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are ways parents can help their teens cope.
Being out of school, away from friends and activities, your teen may find themselves feeling lost.
Counselling Therapist at Atlantic Wellness Centre Kelli Etheridge says you’ll need to check in on a daily basis to see how they’re doing.
“Not having a purpose sometimes can be super challenging for kids. They don’t have a lot going on right now. Encourage them to bake something, take on some sort of project, maybe change their room around, and stay connected with their friends,” she says.
Etheridge says if you can hold on to your established routine, encourage your kids to shower and get dressed.
“So, it might be tempting to sleep all day, because you feel like it is a vacation. If you can stay on schedule as much as possible, try to get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time, stay off your phone so you are not on it for the whole day,” she says.
She adds it helps to focus on the positives and what you are feeling grateful for.
“Check in and see what they’re feeling and share what you’re feeling. It’s important to acknowledge that this is tough, but remind them that we are going to get through it. Make a plan with them and that will help them to feel empowered,” Etheridge says.
