The Canada-U.S. border is now closed to non-essential travel due to COVID-19.
The temporary agreement between the Canadian and American governments took effect Saturday morning, and will last until April 21 at 1 p.m. Atlantic Time.
There will be some exceptions like people travelling for work, essential services like medical care, or for what officials call compassionate reasons.
Shipments like transport trucks will not be affected.
A statement from the prime minister’s office says the new agreement also includes returning “irregular migrants” who attempt to cross anywhere at the Canada-U.S. border.
The Government of Canada is asking all travellers entering Canada to self-isolate for 14 days after returning to the country.
People who are flying back to Canada will not be allowed onto their flights if they show symptoms of COVID-19.
Anyone turned away will be refused for 14 days, or until they present a medical certificate confirming they don’t carry the 2019 novel coronavirus.
