Vulnerable New Brunswickers living on the street or in shelters are included in all COVID-19 planning.
Premier Blaine Higgs said they are aware anyone struggling with chronic homelessness is vulnerable to the virus.
“The department of social development is working closely with our homeless shelters to encourage best practices in preventing the onset and spread of the virus. There are contingency plans in place in the event a homeless person becomes ill with COVID-19,” Higgs said.
Higgs again discouraged the hoarding of groceries and medications says the supply chain remains strong and it won’t change.
He reassured anyone worried about finding a meal in the coming days particularly those on the street.
“For New Brunswickers who are fearing potential food insecurity, let me reassure you. The department of social development is in constant contact with food banks, soup kitchens and other programs like Meals on Wheels and similar organizations,” Higgs said.
Higgs says the government has offered to provide financial assistance and workers to any of these agencies experiencing difficulty in this period.
