Grand Manan residents have received a late Christmas gift from the provincial government.
A new pilot project will see the Grand Manan ferry run on New Year’s Day for the first time.
Dennis Greene, mayor of Grand Manan, said residents have been asking for New Year’s Day service for nearly a decade.
Greene said a committee of representatives from the village and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure worked hard to make it happen.
“We have had discussions [with the province] probably for the last four years,” Greene said. “Last year we thought we had succeeded, but they had previously scheduled a maintenance day so that was out.”
Businesses Surveyed
Greene said the village recently did a survey of businesses to see if they would be interested in Christmas Day or New Year’s Day service.
He said the survey found little interest in a Christmas Day run but lots of enthusiasm for New Year’s Day service.
“It’s just the one trip in the middle of the day, which is what we asked for,” Greene said. “It’ll leave Grand Manan at 11:30 a.m. and Blacks Harbour at 1:30 p.m.”
Greene said he hopes people will take advantage of the pilot project so it can become permanent.
