The president of the new Irving Oil Field House project is pleased with how construction has gone.
Work on the new 127,000-square-foot facility, located in east Saint John, started in early 2018. Bill MacMackin said the $27-million project is on schedule and substantially on budget.
“We’ve got a couple of small overages, but generally, we feel pretty happy about how our construction team has worked,” said MacMackin.
The facility, which is being managed by the YMCA, is being opened in stages.
MacMackin said the child-care and lobby areas have been up and running for a couple of weeks now. The fitness centre and community centre will open next week, with the track and field area set to open sometime in October.
Once everything is up and running, MacMackin said they expect to be extremely busy.
“We have events booked for November, we have events booked into the winter for different competitions, the soccer community has booked a lot of time, so really, as soon as the main building opens in October, we’ll be very busy,” he said.
Earlier this week, Irving Oil announced it was donating $2-million to the new facility, which will bear the company’s name.
