The Saint John Police Force says the 2011 death of multi-millionaire businessman Richard Oland is no longer an active investigation.
The statement from police Chief Bruce Connell comes after Crown prosecutors announced they will not appeal Dennis Oland’s acquittal.
Dennis was found not guilty of killing his father in July after a judge ruled the Crown failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
“It is the function of the Saint John Police Force to complete an investigation then turn the file over to the Crown Prosecutor’s Office. The Crown decides if there is sufficient evidence to warrant a charge, as was done with this case,” said Connell in a statement.
“Our investigators worked closely with the Crown Prosecutors assigned to this file, both during the initial investigation and the follow up.”
Connell said police will still consider any other information or evidence which comes to their attention.
Meanwhile, the New Brunswick Police Commission said it is determining how to proceed with its review of the force’s handling of the homicide investigation.
“This is an active, ongoing, important file for the commission, and we want to carefully assess all relevant info,” said Jennifer Smith, the commission’s executive director, in a statement.
Smith said part of the determination will be considering the findings and recommendations of a third-party review of the commission itself.
