Sobeys is going to be the first national grocer to eliminate plastic bags by the end of January 2020.
The company says this change will take 225 million plastic grocery bags out of circulation per year at its 255 Sobeys locations across the country.
Sobeys says it will be providing paper bags as an alternative, but are hoping customers will bring their own reusable bags.
In August, grocery stores will be introducing a line of reusable mesh bags made from recycled water bottles to provide customers with an alternative to carry their fresh produce.
The company says it is doing this to help the environment with sustainable alternatives that drive long-term behavioral change.
