The federal government is continuing its efforts to protect the North Atlantic Right Whale after 8 whales were found dead in Canadian waters.
Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Jonathan Wilkinson met with members of the government, non-government organizations and universities working hard to keep the whales safe.
Transport Canada, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Marine Mammal Rescue are among those working tirelessly to protect the whales.
Wilkinson says that includes the efforts of over 200 individuals and met with several of them to discuss their work.
He says the decline of biodiversity is linked to climate change and more needs to be done to prevent it, here and around the world.
Earlier this month, the federal government put in place additional safety measures including the closure of certain fisheries and mandatory ship slow downs.
Wilkinson says while some whales were affected by ship strikes, necropsies revealed it was not the cause of death.
Additional measures include searching and retrieving lost fishing gear, which impact a variety of marine species.
