Reports of a natural gas odour inside an uptown bank led to a full response from Saint John fire crews Monday afternoon.
Platoon Chief Kevin Comeau with the Saint John Fire Department said they were called to the CIBC at King and Germain streets around 12:45 p.m.
“Upon arrival, crews simultaneously checked the CIBC building itself, which was evacuated upon arrival, and the adjoining buildings on Germain and King,” said Comeau.
No natural gas readings were detected but there was still a slight odour in the building’s basement, Comeau said.
“We had Enbridge [Gas New Brunswick] arrive on scene and discovered that there was a [leak in a] seal around one of their supply lines,” he said. “They were able to isolate that.”

As many as five fire trucks were on the scene at one point, along with an ambulance and several police vehicles. A police officer was also directing traffic at the intersection of King and Germain streets.
Fire crews cleared the scene by around 1:30 p.m. Monday and Enbridge Gas crews left a few minutes later.
No one was hurt, Comeau said.
