Seniors have a new place to go in Rothesay to socialize and try out new activities.
The Rothesay Hive is an age-friendly community centre located inside the town hall.
More than 100 people gathered for the centre’s official opening last Thursday.
Coun. Miriam Wells said they have partnered with the YMCA of Greater Saint John to provide the programming.
“There will be activities throughout the day every day because there’s a full-time coordinator here,” said Wells. “Then we will get feedback from people and we will ramp it up even more in the fall.”
Activities include movies, board games, book club, café & conversation, cribbage, knitting, seated yoga, and programs to help seniors understand a variety of web services.
Some of the activities are free while others have a small cost. Most of the activities are free for YMCA members.

Mayor Nancy Grant said the centre has been in the making since the fall of 2017.
“The hope is that people who may be feeling lonely will come here, form friendships, get into activities, and just enjoy life more,” Grant said.
Several music students from Rothesay High School were on hand for the grand opening. Grant said the centre is truly meant to be an intergenerational project.
“We have a connection with an elementary school next door as well as the high school across the street,” she said. “I think that’s really important on both ends of the spectrum — the story-sharing and the teaching that can go on both ways.”
The Rothesay Hive is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
