Saint John’s deer nuisance program is officially a go for this fall, after the province sent its letter of approval to council.
Provincial staff from the Department of Energy and Resources will work closely with city staff on implementing the program, and creating mitigation strategies.
Starting in October, it will run a pilot program in Millidgeville, an “problem area” residents say has an overwhelming amount of deer.
Landowners will be able to apply to have a hunter come on to their property and shoot one deer.
Earlier this year, the city passed a bylaw making it illegal to feed deer, a prerequisite for the program.
The program will commence with the beginning of this year’s hunting season.
