A new councillor has been elected for Ward 3 in Saint John.
Mariah Darling received the most votes in Monday’s municipal byelection.
Darling, who was one of 11 candidates vying for the vacant council seat, received 32 per cent of the overall vote.
Ryan Moore came in second with nearly 23 per cent of the vote. Adam Donnelly and Kevin McCann were tied for third, with each receiving 9.7 per cent.
The Ward 3 seat became vacant after former councillor David Hickey was elected in October’s provincial election.
Darling is no stranger to politics, having run in that same election against Hickey. Darling’s father, Don Darling, also served as Saint John’s mayor from 2016 to 2021.
Ward 3, which includes the south-central peninsula, parts of the east and west sides, and a small portion of the north end. It is also represented by long-time councillor Gerry Lowe.
Just 1,173 of 11,736 eligible voters cast a ballot in Monday’s byelection for a voter turnout of just under 10 per cent.
Elsewhere, Tom Raithby was elected as Ward 1 councillor in the community of Fundy-St. Martins.
Raithby received 49 per cent of the overall vote. Voter turnout in the ward was just six per cent.
Mary-Francis (Fran) Kierstead was elected as Ward 4 councillor in Valley Waters with 52 per cent of the vote. Voter turnout was 13.65 per cent.
Elections New Brunswick says overall voter turnout in the 10 communities with a byelection was 15.6 per cent.
