The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing that he mentions was built in 2008 by Dempsey and his two sisters in partnership with the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where their mother received treatment after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1997. Since 2009, the Center has organized the yearly Dempsey Challenge, an event involving bikes, runners, and walkers that collected $1,000,000 in just its first year.
Patrick’s mother, Amanda Dempsey, led the survivor walk of the Dempsey Challenge for five years before the illness claimed her life in 2014.
