A restaurant chain famous for its chicken and biscuits has plans to open a location in Saint John.
Popeyes will be built on the site of the former 3Mile Steak and Rib House on Golden Grove Road, the company confirmed Tuesday.
The tavern closed its doors suddenly in early 2019 after more than four decades in operation.
Service New Brunswick’s online property assessment tool shows the property sold for $440,000 in June 2021.
Demolition work took place on Tuesday, reducing the building to nothing more than a pile of rubble.
Rumours about Popeyes taking over the east Saint John site have been swirling for weeks.
When contacted on Tuesday, the company confirmed to our newsroom that those rumours are true, adding that the location is scheduled to open in 2023.
Popeyes first — and so far only — Atlantic Canadian location opened in the Halifax community of Bedford in March.
The company has more than 3,300 locations throughout the world.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said the location was tentatively scheduled to open by the end of 2022. Popeyes later clarified that it is scheduled to open in 2023.
