A 58-foot ocean racing yacht and its all-female crew will soon be in Saint John.
Maiden is set to arrive in the Port City on August 3.
“Our exact time for the arrival and flotilla is being ironed out right now, but it will likely be a late morning, 11, or noon time frame,” said Paula Copeland, vice-president of engagement and sustainability at Port Saint John.
The vessel and its crew have been on a three-year world tour, travelling to different cities and raising awareness about the importance of girls’ education and women’s empowerment.
Once in Saint John, crew members will meet with charities that work with youth, and education.
“As well have a visit to the vessel to experience what the vessel is like, as well as some talks at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal with groups we have set up with over the past few months,” continued Copeland.
The three-year trip launched from Dubai and will travel 90,000 nautical miles.
Copeland added there will also be events taking place at the AREA 506 Container Village including a free screening of the Maiden film.
“The village has been working with us on some pop-ups with some different groups that will be in the village that will relate to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education, or relate to female empowerment, or inspiring females to go into non-traditional careers.”
Maiden will dock at Pugsley Slip in uptown Saint John until August 13.
There will also be an opportunity for the public to engage with the vessel and crew.
