A commitment from the federal government has a slow pace.
The federal government has set an international commitment of protecting 25 per cent of its lands by 2025, as well as a more ambitious goal of 30 per cent by 2030.
Catherine Grenier, president of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), said Canada is at 13.5 per cent, so the country has a lot of work to do to meet that target.
“Yes, it is a very ambitious goal, but we have no choice. Nature is the solution in terms of biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, and we’re seeing it right now as areas are experiencing heat waves, wildfires, and flooding,” she said.
However, Grenier mentioned that NCC has committed to picking up that pace.
“We’ve committed to doubling the impacts with the work that we’ve done for the last 60 years, and for the next decade we want to double it.”
Grenier added NCC will do this by working with all stakeholders, all levels of government, Indigenous communities, and private corporations to find solutions and get protection faster for the country.
