It’s their first time being on this list, and it’s not a good thing for Monarch Butterflies.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates that the most recognizable species of butterfly is on the brink of extinction as it’s believed that 99.9 per cent of the Monarch’s population has declined since the 80’s.
In the past decade, scientists put the decline between 22 and 72 per cent alone. With deforestation happening across the butterflies migration path, and the high use of pesticides and herbicides… much of the beloved winged creatures and milkweed plant have been destroyed.
With the population going from 10 million to just under two thousand butterflies, many communities have taken it upon themselves to use natural repellants, replanting milkweed and to raise eggs and caterpillars until they morph into butterflies.
