Dogs in west Saint John may have a new place to play come September.
Work continues toward opening a dog park on the west side, the only area of the city without one.
Project organizer Connie Quinn said the idea came about because of her need to find space to walk for her two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Luna and Nova.
“It was very difficult for [me] to be able to walk them alone. We needed a fenced-in area where they could be off-leash and get their full exercise in,” Quinn said
The city helped them secure a piece of land behind the Peter Murray Arena off Dever Road.
Quinn said the $50,000 project was awarded $10,000 through the city’s Land for Public Purposes Trust Fund.
Quinn said the first step is to have Fundy Fencing come in and remove the fencing between the two existing spaces to allow for the large dog park.
“As soon as that’s done, we can get the excavators in there and remove the [asphalt], topsoil and everything. Once the hydroseed is down, it will just depend on how long it takes the grass to grow before they can let the dogs in,” Quinn said
If all the components fall into place, Quinn hopes the park can be open by September.
