A strike deadline for VIA Rail workers has been extended until later on Monday.
Around 2,400 workers were prepared to walk off the job as of 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time.
However, Unifor says the deadline has been pushed to 4 p.m. Eastern as talks continue.
“We remain hopeful that a deal can be reached,” Lana Payne, Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer, said in a news release.
The union is assuring Canadians that rail service will continue throughout the day Monday.
Unifor represents maintenance workers, on-board service personnel, chefs, sales agents and customer service staff.
VIA Rail is offering the opportunity for travellers to make changes to travel plans before July 31 without additional fees.
