The president and CEO of CPA New Brunswick says our region is an attractive location for Chartered Professional Accountants.
It comes as the organization releases its latest report, which suggests that CPAs play a critical role in New Brunswick’s economy.
Statistics from the organization show the industry boosted the province’s GDP by $480 million in 2021.
“This represents nearly 1.4 per cent of the total provincial GDP contribution, similar to the total tourism industry in the province,” said Mylène Lapierre, president and CEO of CPA New Brunswick.
“This is a significant contribution to New Brunswick’s economy.”
CPAs offer a wide range of accounting and managerial skills in areas ranging from financial reporting, finance and taxation, to strategy, governance and performance management.
She believes New Brunswick has many advantages, such as a bilingual workforce and the flexibility of remote working.
“Now is really the time to leverage those advantages to promote the growth of the CPA profession in New Brunswick, allowing us to move all of the province forward,” said Lapierre.
As the current workforce inches closer to retirement, Lapierre said CPA New Brunswick wants to recruit more young people over the coming years so the industry can continue to grow, demonstrating the value of a future profession in accounting.
The organization also wants to ease the entry path for internationally-trained accountants.
According to Lapierre, New Brunswick attracted only 1.3 per cent of Canada-wide permanent residents with an accounting background in 2021.
“We want to be part of the solution and try to work on different initiatives to help us work through these challenges and recruit new CPA members as part of our profession,” she said.
“Moving our province’s economy forward is something that we value at CPA New Brunswick and Chartered Professional Accountants play a critical role in a successful economy.”
