Minor injuries were reported after a fire tore through a homeless encampment in Saint John’s north end.
Platoon Chief Steve Voutour said the blaze was reported under the Main Street Viaduct just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
“There’s an encampment there for an individual that’s living off the grid. The fire had erupted and spread from the living area that they had there to the trees,” Voutour said Wednesday morning.
Voutour said a number of disposable propane cylinders on-site also caused some minor explosions.
The first arriving crews managed to douse the flames within a couple of minutes, he said. They remained on the scene to ensure the grass and trees were fully extinguished.
“There’s one person that lives at the encampment that had suffered some minor burns and a small cut to their face. They were treated by Ambulance New Brunswick,” said Voutour.
The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental, he said.
