New Brunswick is reporting four more deaths related to COVID-19 and a jump in virus-related hospitalizations.
The latest weekly COVID-19 report for the week ending Saturday, July 2, was released by the Department of Health on Tuesday.
The latest deaths, according to the provincial report, all involve people between the ages of 80 and 89.
There have been 429 deaths attributed to the virus in New Brunswick since the pandemic began.
Meanwhile, New Brunswick’s two health authorities are reporting a roughly 60 per cent increase in the number of active COVID-19 hospitalizations week over week.
The latest figures show 50 people in the hospital as of Saturday, including four in intensive care. That is compared to the 31 hospitalizations and one ICU admission reported by the health authorities one week earlier.
- Horizon Health: 36 active admissions and three in intensive care, compared to 24 active admissions and one in intensive care one week ago.
- Vitalité Health: 14 active admissions and one in intensive care, compared to seven active admissions and no one in intensive care one week ago.
The figures reported by the health authorities include those hospitalized for COVID and those with the virus being treated primarily for other conditions.
Meanwhile, the latest weekly COVIDWATCH update from the province showed 19 people in the hospital for COVID-19 as of Saturday, an increase of four. The number of people in an ICU increased to one.
The numbers from the province only include patients who were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19.
There were 22 new hospital admissions for COVID over the past week compared to six new admissions the previous week, according to Public Health. One of those new admissions involved someone under the age of 10.
There were four new ICU admissions for COVID-19 over the same period.
According to the two health authorities, 182 health care workers were off the job as of Saturday for COVID-related reasons, up from 118 a week earlier.
There were 1,915 reported positive cases of COVID-19 over the past week, a week-over-week increase of nearly 87 per cent. Those figures included 768 PCR tests and 1,147 rapid tests.
Amongst the most recent random samples sequenced, 53 per cent were the BA.2 variant, 14 per cent were BA.4, and 33 per cent were BA.5.
In terms of vaccinations, the Department of Health says 615 doses were given out over the past week, including 80 first doses, 160 second doses, and 375 booster doses.
Just over 88 per cent of eligible New Brunswickers have received two doses and 52.8 per cent have received booster shots.
