If you’re going out for Canada Day, you may want to consider leaving your furry friends at home to keep your dogs calm during celebrations.
New Brunswick SPCA Executive Director Lesley Rogers said in an interview Tuesday that dogs have hypersensitive hearing, so fireworks, thunderstorms and other loud noises can put them on high alert.
She added that as much as other events may be fun for a pet, fireworks can be extremely stressful.
“The number one recommendation for pet owners is to keep your dogs home and safe inside,” said Rogers.
“Unless you’re really confident that your dog is comfortable with fireworks and experienced and not really alarmed by them, I would say the best advice is to not bring them to a fireworks display.”
Rogers recommends that pet owners try finding a safe space in their homes for furry friends far from any potential harm.
“If your dog is always crated, they may find the comfort there, or keeping your dog in a smaller, confined area with some background noise, like a fan going in a bathroom, could help them seem calmer,” she said.
“And in cases where they have some severe reactions of anxiety, you can always speak to your veterinarian about other methods that might help you.”
Rogers adds that if pet owners decide to bring their pets to any festivities, they should make sure to keep them on a leash at all times and they are licensed in New Brunswick.
